The Observatory of Spanish in Europe is a research center founded in 2023 at Heidelberg Center for Ibero-American Studies (HCIAS), Heidelberg University. Its main goal is to offer data that can help tackle the emerging trends related to Spanish and its speakers in Europe.

Dr. Pilar Valero delivers the talk "¿Quién habla español en Europa? Dos realidades, una misma lengua"
On March 11, 2026, Dr. Pilar Valero delivered the talk “¿Quién habla español en Europa? Dos realidades, una misma lengua” at Universidad Castilla-La Mancha in Spain. The lecture was part of the “Seminario Permanente de Lengua Española”.

The OSE is organizing the Jornadas didácticas para profesores de ELE/EL2 2026
On April 18, 2026, the Jornadas didácticas para profesores de ELE/EL2 will be held at Heidelberg University. The free event is organized by the publishers Difusión and Ernst Klett together with the Observatory of Spanish in Europe and consists of four plenary sessions and a round table discussion in which professionals in the field of ELE/EL2 will address current topics of interest.

Prof. Óscar Loureda delivers the lecture "El español en Europa" at the Universitat de València, Spain
On February 27, Prof. Dr. Óscar Loureda, director of the OSE, delivered the lecture “El español en Europa” at the Espai Cultural FFTIC of Universitat de València, Spain. His presentation analyzed the current position of Spanish in Europe from a demolinguistic perspective and with a focus on its recent evolution, internal dynamics, and future projection.

Celia Hernández Pérez successfully defends her doctoral dissertation
We congratulate Celia Hernández Pérez on the successful defense of her doctoral dissertation on February 20, 2026, which was awarded summa cum laude. Her research focuses on Encapsulating and Coreferential Anaphoric Relations in Discourse Construction: An Experimental Approach to Cognitive Processing, providing new insights into language processing.
